Bey IV tries to move murder trial out of Alameda County

Accused triple killer Yusuf Bey IV is as legally entitled to have his murder trial moved out of Alameda County as former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle was in successfully moving his murder trial, Bey IV’s lawyer said Monday. Superior Court Judge Morris Jacobson set arguments in the matter for the week of July 19, saying he expected them to take several days.

Commentary: The court should not allow Yusuf Bey IV to have unmonitored telephone use. Giving Bey IV unmonitored telephone use would clearly not be in the public interest.

Bakery leader wants access to unmonitored phone calls in jail, prosecutors contend

Yusuf Bey IV wants to serve as his own attorney in a real estate fraud case — a move that could allow him to make unmonitored telephone calls from jail as he is being investigated on suspicion of ordering the deaths of witnesses in his upcoming triple murder trial. At a hearing Wednesday, the prosecutor in the real estate case said he would seek to limit Bey IV’s communications and appoint a private investigator to make calls for him.

Judge postpones sentencing of Bakery member in torture kidnap case

The sentencing of a follower of the defunct Your Black Muslim Bakery convicted in April of kidnapping and torture charges was postponed Friday so prosecutors can respond to a claim that Richard Lewis is entitled to a new trial. Superior Court Judge Thomas Reardon set Lewis’ sentencing for July 16.
