Chauncey Bailey Project

Conspiracy Missed?

By Bob Butler

More than a year after the assassination of Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey, the police investigation has resulted in the arrest of only one person. An exhaustive examination of hundreds of pages of police documents obtained by the Chauncey Bailey Project and interviews with criminal law experts and confidential sources have revealed numerous instances in which the lead detective, Oakland Police homicide Sgt. Derwin Longmire, failed to document any analysis of evidence of a conspiracy to kill Bailey, violated police procedures and interfered in other criminal cases on behalf of the leader of Oakland’s Your Black Muslim Bakery. Reporting by the Chauncey Bailey Project and concern about the Bailey murder case has prompted the department internal affairs unit to open its own investigation of Sergeant Longmire¹s ties to Bey IV and his handling of the Bailey case.
